Chapter 1
The Weight That Speaks
The first thing was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind but the kind that unsettles the soul. This silence was alive. It breathed. It pressed in on it's ears until even it's own heartbeat sounded like an intrusion.
It stood at the center of an empty space, wrapped in a black robe that seemed heavier than clothe should ever be. The fabric dragged against It's skin as though it had absorbed years, decades of sorrow. It's posture bent slightly forward, not from age, but from something far more oppressive.
Weight.''
Not physical. Not visible.
But real.
It's fingers trembled as it lifted It's head slowly, like someone resisting gravity itself. It's lips parted, and when It spoke, It's voice sounded like it had traveled through time.
“Heavy… on my heart.”
The words lingered in the air, echoing faintly.
“I am unable to forget…”
A sudden chill swept through the space, brushing against it like unseen fingers.
“With its grip so tight… I can’t seem to let go.”
It's breathing grew uneven.
And then...
It came.
A whisper.
So faint at first, almost as thought it was It's imagination.
“You remember…”
It froze.
It's eyes darted around, searching for a source. There was nothing. No one.
But the whisper returned. Louder.
“You remember what you did.”
It's chest tightened.
“I didn’t—” It tried to respond, but It's voice faltered.
A second voice joined the first.
“You failed.”
A third.
“You ruined everything.”
And then suddenly, they were everywhere.
Surrounding It.
Layered. Overlapping. Relentless.
“You’re not worthy.”
“You should have done better.”
“You cannot escape this.”
It clutched It's chest, gasping.
“No… no… please…”
But the voices did not stop.
They grew.
Sharper. Harsher. Closer.
“You will carry this forever.”
It's knees buckled slightly, but it forced itself upright.
Then the shadows began to move.
At first, they were just distortions, subtle shifts in the darkness. But gradually, they took form.
Figures.
Distorted. Uneven. Not quite human.
Each one carried something.
Bundles. Chains. Fragments of what looked like broken pieces...glass? Stone? Memories?
They approached It slowly.
Deliberately.
“No…” It whispered, shaking It's head. “Please… no…”
The first figure reached It.
Without hesitation, the figure lifted the load it carried and dropped it across It's shoulders.
The impact forced a gasp out of It.
Pain shot through It's body. Not physical pain, but something deeper. Something that pierced memory itself.
“Guilt,” the figure hissed.
It staggered but remained standing.
Another stepped forward.
Another weight.
“Shame.”
It's knees trembled violently now.
A third.
“Regret.”
It's breath hitched. It's vision blurred.
One after another, they came.
Each figure placing something unseen but unbearable upon It.
Failure. Fear. Condemnation.
It's body bent further under the pressure.
The robe clung to It like a second skin now, soaked in the heaviness of everything It carried.
“I can’t…” It cried, it's voice breaking. “I can’t carry this…”
But they did not stop.
They never stopped.
Until finally...
It's knees hit the ground.
A sharp, hollow sound echoed as It collapsed, It's body unable to bear the weight any longer.
The voices softened then.
Not out of mercy but satisfaction.
“You belong here.”
It's head dropped forward.
It's strength was gone.
It's resistance… gone.
And just when it seemed like the darkness had completely swallowed It,
A sound pierced through.
Soft.
Melodic.
A song.
It was distant at first, like a memory It couldn’t quite grasp. But it grew clearer with each passing second.
Light.
Faint but undeniable began to seep into the space.
The figures paused.
For the first time,
They hesitated.
It lifted It's head slightly, It's tear-filled eyes searching.
And though It could not yet see the source. But something within her shifted.
A flicker.
Small.
Fragile.
But alive.
Hope.
